We examined the effects of gender and drug dose on the rate of self-administration of methamphetamine by young male and female rats. We also investigated self-administration of methamphetamine and the reinstatement of self-administration behavior following extinction. The results indicated that the self-administration of methamphetamine was unaffected by gender. However, the number of responses required for drug reinforcement was dose dependent. At the lower dose, the number of responses was greater for males than for females. With a higher dose of methamphetamine, the female rate of responding decreased relative to the male rate. The rate of reinstatement of methamphetamine-seeking behavior was greater for females than for males. The present results suggest that gender differences in the self-administration of methamphetamine are related to differences in drug dose, and that there is a greater reinstatement of methamphetamine-seeking behavior in females than in males.Q:
